Thanksgiving in Washington DC

I’ve just come back from a week’s visit to Washington DC to see my brother and family. Here are some pictures I took while I was there.

This picture was taken inside the National Gallery of Art on the Mall:

This picture was taken in the adjoining modern art wing of the gallery. It is a sculpture based on a work by Arcimboldo. The original painting from the 1500’s is on display in a special exhibition devoted to the artist’s work:


This is the Capitol Building at the end of The Mall:


This is Space Ship One, which is currently hanging from the ceiling of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum:

We went to see a most unusual exhibition of ice sculpture featuring characters from the Dr Seuss story “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!” The show was held in a tent maintained at -12 degrees Centigrade. Cold enough that we were all given parkas to wear over our regular coats.
